Special Education

Welcome to the SEN section of the Notre Dame High School website. We use this as our SEN information report, which tells you about how we support children with SEN and their families in our school.

St Julie     Sunflower

Here you will find an introduction to our work, followed by a series of links that will tell you about different areas of our work in more detail. It's going to take us a while to put all the information that we want to give you on here. So, in the meantime, if you want to know more about any particular part of our work and you can't find it here, please contact the SEN department at the School address.

Introduction to our work.

"In the schools teach whatever is necessary to equip the students for life."

 - St. Julie Billiart, Founder of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.

In all the many and varied aspects of school life, it is hard to imagine a context in which St Julie's instruction is more appropriate than Special Education. 'Equipping our students for life' is what we do; it is where we start and, hopefully, where we finish when considering how best to serve our students with special needs. In our hallmarks (Click here for Notre Dame's Ethos and Hallmarks) we have set ourselves the tremendous challenge of 'honouring the dignity and sacredness of each person', and our daily provision for our special needs students is inspired and guided by their divine origin and eternal destiny.

There's much more to our special educational needs provision than we can share here but hopefully this gives you a flavour of how we approach things. Please feel free to download any of the information below and if you want to know something that isn't there, please do not hesitate to contact us.

SEN news

New Staff

We were very sad to see Miss Harrand and Mrs Brawne moving on from Notre Dame at Christmas but we wish them well and thank God for all their work when they were with us. One of the great sorrows of working with children with SEN is the holes we leave when we move on. Many of our children have benefitted from their friendly and ‘can do’ approach and will miss them greatly. However, we now have three new members of staff; Miss Miller, Mrs Healy and Ms McCreddin. We are really glad to have them with us and look forward to getting to know them better.

Exams and access arrangements

JCQ, who oversee all public exams, have set the deadline for applying for access arrangements as 21 February 2017. As this falls during the half term holidays, we will need to have all access arrangements in place by Friday 17th February.

‘Friends Forever’ programme

We are very pleased to announce that our educational psychologist, Ms Barragry, assigned to us by the Local Authority, along with one of our LSAs, Mrs Scott, will be running this programme from March 2017 at Notre Dame. The programme is designed to help children to develop the skills and internal resources to develop meaningful and lasting relationships. It is a great example of ‘teaching the children what they need to equip them from life’ and we are looking forward to working with Ms Barragry.

Mr Dowdeswell, February 2017.
