Hallam Teaching School Alliance is a large and open alliance of schools mostly from South Yorkshire but extending across the Yorkshire and Humber region. The alliance is led by Notre Dame High School, Sheffield which is a cohort 1 National Teaching School. The Director of Teaching School is Paul Haigh who has been a secondary teacher for 16 years and is based at Notre Dame.
Any school is welcome to join the alliance, there are no subscription fees to agreements to sign and schools can access as much or as little of the services as they want and also work with other local TSAs should they wish (Notre Dame works closely with all local TSAs and has successfully supported several schools on their journey to Teaching School designation)
Many of the alliance schools are Strategic Partners who offer something significant to the alliance such as hosting teacher CPD events, training teachers, supplying system leaders who support other schools (NLEs LLEs and SLEs) or joining in Research and Development projects but there is no obligation to contribute back to the offer, although many schools find by reaching out to support others they gain as school.
The alliance includes all types of schools such as Church Schools, Sponsor Academies, Convertor Academies and Maintained Local Authority Community Schools. The alliance is shaped and steered by a Governance Group made up of representative Headteachers and Strategic Partners including Diocesan Officers, Academy Sponsors, University Partner and Local Authority Leaders.
Hallam Teaching School Alliance has a very large Initial Teacher Training business in partnership with Leeds Trinity University where schools are using School Direct to select and train their own trainees in partnership with Notre Dame as a way to source and shape their own Newly Qualified Teachers. The course is an innovative 100% school based PGCE with Master's modules that extend into the NQT year to bridge initial training with the early career.
The alliance also has a highly successful Professional Development programme taking teachers onwards on the journey to outstanding and then gives opportunities to support other teachers through Coaching Qualifications we offer and routes to become a Specialist Leader of Education for the alliance
We are a partner of Learners First led by Wickersley Teaching School and are co-signatories of the National College Leadership license they coordinate along with Sheffield Teaching School Alliance. This gives our teachers access to the National College Leadership Programmes at (NPQML, NPQSL and NPQH) which enables us to talent spot and develop the future leaders of our schools.
There is a strong culture of Research and Development that permeates all of the work of the alliance with a culture of sharing good practice from one of CPD right up to major school to school support contracts where failing schools have successfully been turned round in recent years.
The alliance has a regional and national reputation shaping the direction of the Teaching School project, founding and leading the National Teaching Schools New Technology Advisory Board (NTAB) and regionally leading a National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (NCETM) Maths Education Strategic Hub (MESH) and working with the Science Learning Centre is leads the Science Learning Partnership (SLP) for South Yorkshire.
